A Brief Look At Vision Therapy

without comments

Vision therapy is also known as visual training, vision training or visual therapy. It covers a wide range of techniques that are used to correct different visual disorders. Vision training incorporates a range of non-surgical procedures to achieve this, which can be divided into two main categories.

First category is orthoptic vision therapy. This particular type of vision therapy is aimed at treating binocular vision disorders such as diplopia. Many optometrists and occupational therapists employ this type of therapy.

The second category is the behavioral therapy also known as developmental optometry. Only optometrists that specialize in this field practice this therapy. Behavioral therapy looks at treating visual problems that are related to concentration and visual attention.

Visual therapy is not only limited to treat the above but is also prescribed to those that suffer from eye strain and headaches that are triggered by visual problems. Professional athletes sometime also employ visual therapy to enhance their peripheral vision.

The therapy has also been utilized to address learning difficulties that can be caused as a result of impaired vision. Impaired vision may get in the way of educational needs such as reading and writing. Many people do not want to undergo laser vision correction surgery. Optometrists have not claimed that visual training is a direct remedy for people with learning disabilities.

In practice, vision therapy is a program of vision exercises and processes that are taken under the guidance of a doctor. They will be individualized exercises for the patient to help develop or improve their visual abilities.

Visual therapy includes more than just eye exercises that can be practiced on one’s own. They need to be supervised by an optometrist as other medical instruments are used in combination such as corrective lenses, optical filter and prism lenses. The patient will also need to partake in a vision examination before the therapy to determine if visual therapy will be needed.
