How does sulfur help in treating acne?

Sulfur is often used in combination with sodium sulfacetamide, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. A sulphur acne treatment product works by acting as an antiseptic and exfoliant. Sulfur dries the skin, reduces oiliness, and prevents blockage of the minute pores. It penetrates pores in the skin and helps in clearing the propinobacterium infection in acne. The properties of sulfur have ensured its inclusion in many over the counter medicines for the treatment conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, eczema, scabies, and lice besides acne.

Sulfur is an excellent product to deal with mild acne, blackheads and whiteheads. It may however not be as successful against cystic acne.

Are sulfur containing products safe?

Sulfur acne treatment rarely causes serious problems. While some sulfur containing products can cause skin discoloration, excess drying of the skin is the most common complaint. It is advisable to stay away from drying soaps and abrasive scrubs when using a sulfur treatment regime. The effect of sulfur on the developing fetus is not known and expecting mothers are advised to consult their doctor before using sulfur containing products.
