While it may be one of the most popular, if not the most popular eye surgeries, Lasik eye surgery is not the panacea that many people profess it to be. In fact, traditional Lasik eye surgery has been found to be successful at correcting vision problems in only eighty percent of cases.

What many Lasik proponents usually fail to discuss is that there are several potential complications which can occur. While this article isn’t designed to scare you into not getting Lasik if it is appropriate for your situation, it is designed to make you aware of the most significant potential side effect which you may encounter.

This severe potential complication is infection. Any time a break occurs in the skin, there is always a possibility of infection setting in. As you can imagine, since the eye surgeon will make a flap in your cornea, this is the location that an infection could become a problem. If you feel that you have an eye infection, it is critical that you visit your eye surgeon immediately. In a worst case scenario, infection can result in either deteriorated vision or even blindness.

In order to minimize the risk of your eye becoming infected, your Lasik eye surgeon may prescribe antibiotics. If he or she does so, make sure that you take them.

Additionally, your eye surgeon will provide you with instructions to care for your eye. By following these instruction to the letter, you can reduce the probability of an eye infection occurring.

Now that we have explained to you the potential complication of infection, we feel that you are better educated at knowing what to expect. When you go to your Lasik consultation, we highly recommend that you discuss potential complications with your eye surgeon. If you feel silly doing so, you shouldn’t. A reputable Lasik eye surgeon should be more than willing to discuss issues which pertain to your safety and health.
