Signs of menopause can begin 10 to 15 years before the onset of menopause. Medical doctors define menopause as the time when a woman has not had her menstrual period for a year. Upon menopause, your ovaries produce less estrogen and progesterone and you are no longer able to become pregnant. The average age for a woman to start menopause is 52. However the age is dependent on the individual and can occur earlier or later. Menopause is a three-stage process.

Perimenopause, the first stage, is a period of hormonal fluctuation that can exist for 5 to 15 years or more. Initial perimenopause symptoms are irregular periods and spotting which is caused by fluctuating hormone levels. It is still possible to become pregnant during perimenopause because eggs continue to be released from your ovaries. Although, ovulation is sporadic which makes becoming pregnant a little more challenging. Fluctuating hormones during perimenopause can cause symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal changes, sleep disruption, night sweats and irritability. Symptoms vary dependent on many individual variables and not all women experience symptoms.

Menopause is the second stage, which may include symptoms of hot flashes, mood swings and headaches. Other signs can include anxiety, hair loss, irritability, depression, dizziness, memory difficulties and many more. Not everyone experiences signs of menopause, but, for many, this is a distressing time. This is a time when your estrogen level declines and your body stops producing progesterone. Estrogen and progesterone are hormones that are necessary for reproductive function. The changing hormone levels can contribute to calcium loss, potentially resulting in osteoporosis.

The third stage is postmenopausal when menopause symptoms typically begin to diminish. The symptoms of hot flashes and night sweats become a thing of the past for most women.

A blood test called the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) test can assist in determining if you are in any of the stages of menopause. These levels rise higher as your ovaries start to decrease in function. Signs of menopause are a natural part of women’s lives. It has been shown that diet, exercise and adequate rest can relive symptoms. In addition, embracing your body’s natural changes is incredibly beneficial during this time.
