The Acai Berry Drink Craze

without comments

From time to time, the world, and America in particular, seems to go through various health food and dietary crazes, each one more spectacular than the last. One would think that eventually we would run out of third world countries and indigenous peoples to exploit, that all the Shamans of the various tribes who horde their secret and ancient medicinal knowledge would eventually die out. No, rather, celebrities and media moguls and the talking heads of television continue to pander to our petty health interests, and one of the latest crazes is the acai berry.

Acai berry is the fruit of a palm tree that that grows in Brazil and Peru, generally along the Amazon River. It does in fact contain a number of various minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and loads of fiber. These are undeniable facts; scientists from all across the glove have done research into the properties of acai berries and have found many health benefits from this wonderful little fruit. The ancient peoples who were native to Brazil and the rest of South and Central America used to consume acai berries and even make red wine out of them.

A little over three years ago, in the first months of 2006, a study was conducted at the University of Florida. This study was centered on the investigation of the possible cancer fighting properties of the acai berry. The results of the study showed conclusively the acai berry is highly bioavailable, which means it and all of its various nutrients are easily absorbed by the body. Also, the level of antioxidants which it contains is many times higher than most other fruits and vegetables.

All of this makes the acai berry highly marketable and consumers have been literally eating it up. However, one has to be careful when buying acai berries, both online and in the supermarket. Often times the concentrate forms of acai berry drink are watered down to make them “taste better”, and any site that markets their berries or concentrate form as “the best” is most assuredly a scam. Please be careful.
